Namita Kundu
Dr. Namita Kundu received her Ph. D. in
Biochemistry from Calcutta University, India and is currently a
faculty in the University of Maryland at Baltimore. In addition to her
research work in breast cancer, she has a great passion for music. She
received a Sangeet Pravakar degree in classical Indian vocal music and
a Sangeet Bhushan degree in the specialty of Najrulgeeti.

Besides being a vocalist, Namita is also a
lyricist, composer and a conductor. She has recorded a collection of
devotional songs in her own tune in an album titled,
Tomay Heri Nanan Rupe,
some of which are also her own composition. A number of Bengali
devotional and modern songs that she has composed and set to tune in a
collaborative effort have been recorded by eminent Bengali vocalists
in Kolkata. These are included in three titles called,
Bhakti Arghya, a
collection of devotional songs, Ke More Rangalo Aaj, a collection of
contemporary Bengali songs and Bishwa
Mayer Koto Je Roop, a recent
collaborative effort, a collection of contemporary Bengali songs
celebrating various aspects of natural world, which have found a
highly appreciative audience both in India and in the United States.
Several of the songs from these albums have been broadcast many times
in India and Bangladesh from Voice of America.
Her composition Roopnagarir Roopkatha
(The Tale of Roopnagar) is a children's dance drama based on a Bengali
folk tale has been professionally produced. Recently,
she has received an award from Maryland State Arts Council as a music
composer. Playing the harmonium is a passion for her, even
though she is mostly self-taught in this field. She has accompanied
several noted Indian musicians in various concerts.
